It's February, and we can't let the  month go by without  mentioning its radiant birthstone, the amethyst. Amethysts are actually a form of quartz, and come in colors ranging from an intensely rich, deep purple through lighter shades of lavender, blues, and very, very occasionally, greens.

What color of amethyst is best? Well, according to the GIA, the Gemological Institute of America, the most preferred shade of amethyst is an intense reddish to dark purple, but we've found that the best shade of amethyst is the one you like best.

There are many legends and myths associated with the amethyst. People used to believe that wearing amethysts would prevent you from getting drunk, no matter how many glasses of wine you'd enjoyed.  Sadly, it appears that this is not true at all - but it's a great story to tell at parties, especially when you're wearing this great ring:
